About the Course

The explosive growth of the “Internet of Things” is changing our world and the rapid drop in price for typical IoT components is allowing people to innovate new designs and products at home. In this first class in the specialization you will learn the importance of IoT in society, the current components of typical IoT devices and trends for the future. IoT design considerations, constraints and interfacing between the physical world and your device will also be covered. You will also learn how to make design trade-offs between hardware and software. We'll also cover key components of networking to ensure that students understand how to connect their device to the Internet. Please note that this course does not include discussion forums. Upon completing this course, you will be able to: 1. Define the term “Internet of Things” 2. State the technological trends which have led to IoT 3. Describe the impact of IoT on society 4. Define what an embedded system is in terms of its interface 5. Enumerate and describe the components of an embedded system 6. Describe the interactions of embedded systems with the physical world 7. Name the core hardware components most commonly used in IoT devices 8. Describe the interaction between software and hardware in an IoT device 9. Describe the role of an operating system to support software in an IoT device 10. Explain the use of networking and basic networking hardware 11. Describe the structure of the Internet 12. Describe the meaning of a “network protocol” 13. Explain MANETs and their relation to IoT...

This is really a very good course for the people who want to understand the IoT & Cloud computing from basic to enhanced level. The practical approach of assignment of each area is fantastic.

The content of the course is reasonable and gives an introduction to the uninitiated. The peer review sysetm however relies on the experience and knowledge of others which is a flaw in how some of the coursera modules are evaluated.

If you are looking to expand your technical knowledge, opt for a course the has an automated test system (such as the courses on Data Structures and Algorithms).

If you are just considering studying engineering, this course and specialization will be a decent and simplistic introduction into the field.

Overall to basic introduction, only few lectures had good content where you learned important topics. The instructor is good at explaining and clear, but the contents were mostly to easy. Assignments were not good at all, way to basic and simple. Unfortunately, I noticed many cheating on the assignments as well which made me think if Coursera is a serious learning platform??..

I was so excited for this course, but IT failed miserably. I am a complete newbie, I didn't know one thing about IoT before engaging in this course. I gave it one star due to actually learning a small something IN SPITE of the fact the prof is extremely inarticulate. The course is extremely short and vague. There was no care in detail or discussion or presentation. There's no forum to ask questions or to even start or engage in a discussion.

Would not let me leave course after signing up. Due to family issues, I could not continue, but due to some weird policy, after purchasing this class, I could not drop. (Still can't)

Way to basics, just to much explication but nothing actually to implement or to do.

Learning the basics of Internet of things bought a great source of motivation in me of imagining and realizing networking with the help of electronic equipments as I used to study those things theoretically but never implemented them practically. The best part of the course was tracking the movement of a data packet through the Wireshark application. All thanks to our respected Ian Harris sir for all his efforts in making us realize these things practically.

This course helped me understand a lot, not just about IoT devices, but also how the internet functions and the embedded systems. As an electrotechnical and computer engineering student, the information provided in this course was very helpful to understand many things relevant to my area. Now I have a basic understanding of IoT, embedded systems, and internet protocols. Great course for beginners.

Very concise, highly organized, and totally up-to-date and relevant. Dr. Harris' knowledge and style/delivery made this course completely enjoyable. I am very happy with all that I learned. Big props to Dr. Ian Harris!

I highly recommend this course to anyone looking to delve into the world of IoT and embedded systems. I am excited to begin the next course in the 6 class specialization.

First of all the the most important thing is the course instructor, professor Ian Harris made the course enjoyable ,easy to understand and informative. His way of lecturing remove any boredom any person may have from the many new technicality in the course. Also, I like the course content for an introductory course and I have learned many new things and excited to take next course.
