About the Course

The goal of this MOOC is to show that econometric methods are often needed to answer questions. A question comes first, then data are to be collected, and then finally the model or method comes in. Depending on the data, however, it can happen that methods need to be adapted. For example, where we first look at two variables, later we may need to look at three or more. Or, when data are missing, what then do we do? And, if the data are counts, like the number of newspaper articles citing someone, then matters may change too. But these modifications always come last, and are considered only when relevant. An important motivation for me to make this MOOC is to emphasize that econometric models and methods can also be applied to more unconventional settings, which are typically settings where the practitioner has to collect his or her own data first. Such collection can be done by carefully combining existing databases, but also by holding surveys or running experiments. A byproduct of having to collect your own data is that this helps to choose amongst the potential methods and techniques that are around. If you are searching for a MOOC on econometrics that treats (mathematical and statistical) methods of econometrics and their applications, you may be interested in the Coursera course “Econometrics: Methods and Applications” that is also from Erasmus University Rotterdam....

Great intro to the fundamental concepts in econometrics. It does get technical though.

It starts out pretty good - good examples, clear explanation of basic formulas, but as it progresses towards the middle and the end, it all just ends up being about "and it is given by this formula, and this formula etc" without explanation of the derivation of the formulas, so I'm not sure why they even bothered showing those formulas when it is really never discussed or applied. Also, there no notes we could download and no certificate at the end of this course.

The course level is described as for the beginners. However, without solid knowledge in the statistic models (simple and multiple linera regression, vector autoregression model, logistic regression etc), unfortuntely you wont be able to understand the content of the video. With my due respect, the lecturer/professor could be really good at his subject, hoewever the this specific course is not for the beginners. The lecturer does not explain all unknown variables/concepts of the topic, the formulas just appear in the screen and without specific literature (I went through the professor's book and would not say its language and explanation style is comprehensible for beginners) one cannot grasp the idea. Once in the Module 5 in one video the lecturer referred to some previous video where he explained the autoregression model with case about the causalties and unfortuntely there was no such video at all. Therefore, if you are real beginner and maybe have non-math backgorund, then this is not the best course on econometrics for the beginners, it is for the users with solid thematic background.

Good content,

Unfortunately, the course has a terrible interface (seems broken) where you don't have acess to the side menue where you can see all the weeks and move through the videos. The only way to go back and forwards through the materia is clicking the previous and next arrows. This makes the course somewhat hard to use for review adn interview prep.

This course didn't make econometrics enjoyable at all. Even though the questions were interesting and raising curiosity, the explanations were extremely difficult to understand especially for beginner. There are so many formulas and calculations that appeared without a strong clarification.

I think this course should be for A level or high school students...VERY very basic.
